Why attic insulation matters

Most homes lose far more heat through the attic than owners realize. The numbers make the case for topping up.

An estimated 90% of homes in Canada are not insulated sufficiently
Up to 40% of a home’s heat loss is related to poor attic insulation
Proper insulation can save 20–30% on monthly heating and cooling bills
Since January 1, 2017 the provincial code mandates R-60 — about 22.25 inches
The previous code was 18 inches; before that, 12 inches
In 15–20-year-old homes, 12 inches of insulation often settles to just 9–10 inches

Meeting today’s R-60 building standard

As of January 1, 2017, the provincial government mandated a minimum value of R-60 for attic insulation — roughly 22.25 inches. The previous building code equated to 18 inches, and before that, 12 inches.

In most 15-to-20-year-old homes, the 12 inches originally installed has settled to about 9 to 10 inches. That leaves you significantly short of the 22.25 inches required to meet today’s standards, costing you an extra 20 to 30% on your monthly heating and cooling bills.

Owens Corning pink fibreglass, blown in

We use Owens Corning pink fibreglass blown-in insulation — the same trusted brand behind the shingles we install. Blown-in insulation fills gaps and settles evenly across the attic floor for consistent coverage.

Topping up your attic is one of the most cost-effective upgrades a homeowner can make, and it pairs naturally with a roof replacement while the crew is already on site.

How an insulation top-up works

Adding attic insulation is quick and non-disruptive — most of the work happens in the attic.

Strong Arm are very professional and responsive to your needs. Prior to starting, Bobby came out to see if the windstorms created damage last year so that we didn’t have to worry until they came to do the roof in the spring. Top notch in communication and responsiveness. Always willing to answer your questions. Great job!
